July 2008

It’s gettin’ hot tonight . . .

I want this on vinyl, don\'t you?

I’ve been meaning to talk about Heloise and the Savoir Faire since I saw them at the Annex in January.

Sure, their album, Trash, Rats and Microphones, wasn’t out at the time, it made sense to wait a bit. Sure, I heard a copy of the album before it was released and immediately began mentally composing a million loving posts, but still wanted to wait. Sure, even Debbie Harry’s was in their corner. Sure, life happened.

So why am I posting now? Their first music video, for “Illusions,” is up at Out.com

This - look, it’s not like I didn’t understand and empathize with the song before, ok? But now I just adore it, adore everything Heloise herself brings to this group, adore the interplay between image and attitude and queerness.

“Illusions” has always been one of the hottest, tightest, danciest songs on the album, but this takes it to a whole new level. These’s a story here, a feeling, that I’ve lived out and that is shockingly intense to see reflected back in a place I don’t expect, in a really refreshing way. It’s about more than just a night out, it’s about the need for a night out, the need for something slightly devious and drunken and divine. It’s not as glamorized or as fetishized as the Scissor Sister’s “Filthy Gorgeous” but is all the more powerful for its accessibility.

Personally, I can’t wait for more video offerings from this progressive, hip, queer-glam group, but if you haven’t at least given the audio a shot - do it.

I picked this up after accidentally attending a release party for it. (I was in the bar anyway. The party just showed up.) It sounded intriguing. Let’s see if I was wrong. Continue Reading »
